What do I bring to my first appointment?
At the first appointment, your DORS counselor will talk with you about your disability and your employment history. This information will be used to determine if you are eligible for DORS services. If possible, bring records that you have about your medical condition, education and work experience.
If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), please bring verification to expedite eligibility determination and receipt of services. This could be a copy of your award letter or check, or your Ticket to Work. You may call your local Social Security Office, or 1-800-772-1213 to request a copy of verification of benefits.
I’ve heard there are waiting lists. True?
Because of increased demand for services and funding shortfalls, DORS currently has a waiting list. Even if eligible, individuals with less significant disabilities may not receive services at all. Learn more about the current status of DORS waiting list.
I’m not happy with my services from DORS. Who can I talk to?
It is best to begin by talking with the DORS counselor about your concerns. If you can not reach an agreement, you may consider speaking with the field office supervisor.
The Client Assistance Program (CAP) helps individuals who have concerns or difficulties when applying for or receiving rehabilitation services funded under the Rehabilitation Act. CAP can often help resolve concerns by talking with you and rehabilitation staff.
You always have the right to request a formal appeal hearing regarding decisions made about your services by DORS rehabilitation staff. CAP staff can help you prepare an appeal and advise you about the requirements to file an appeal.Contact CAP by calling 410-554-9361; 1-800-638-6243 toll free or TTY/TDD: 410-554-9360 or e-mail: cap@dors.state.md.us.
