Benefits planning/benefits counseling services are a very important part of career decision making for individuals with disabilities who already receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and/or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Benefits planners, also referred to as benefits counselors, are skilled in helping a consumer determine the effect of working on their benefits and are knowledgeable about many work incentives available to beneficiaries.
DORS has established a system of statewide private benefits counselors/benefits planning providers who are paid to provide a menu of services to individuals with disabilities who receive Social Security disability benefits. Currently there are many providers throughout the state. Providers are required to meet and maintain certain standards regarding credentials and continuing education. Individuals meeting these requirements are welcome to apply to become vendors/providers of benefits counseling for DORS consumers. As with all vendors and providers, DORS does not guarantee any referrals. See the Provider/Vendor Fact Sheet for important information about becoming a DORS provider.
