Volunteer Appreciation Event Includes Surprise Governor's Citation

Helen Mandris holds Governor's Citation with Bob Burns

Long-time WTC gift shop volunteer Helen Mandris displays the Governor's Citation presented to her by DORS Director Robert A. Burns.

The annual DORS Volunteer Appreciation lunch honored over sixty volunteers and included a surprise Governor’s Citation for Helen Mandris, who has given over two decades of volunteer service in McKenna's Korner, the WTC gift shop.

Helen began her volunteer work at what was then called the Maryland Rehabilitation Center by assisting in the library and doing filing in the chaplain's office.  She eventually found her niche helping students and DORS staff in the gift shop.  When asked what keeps her coming back to WTC, Helen smiled and said, "After all this time, it feels like my family here."

Last year, DORS volunteers contributed over 18,000 hours of service assisting in critical areas of the agency including academic classes, field offices, career assessment services and the WTC Nearly-New Shop.

DORS also recognized four other volunteers with extensive years of service.

Edith Sweigert, who has given many hours of clerical asistance in DORS Frederick field office, was unable to attend. The other three honorees were:

charles Lach holding a certificate with Burns
Charles Lach, in recognition of 20 years of outstanding service to the clients and staff of the Workforce & Technology Center.  Currently, Charles assists the teachers and tutors in the Academics department.

Don Hart holding certificate with Burns
Donald Hart, in recognition of 18 years of outstanding service to the clients and staff of the Workforce & Technology Center.  He volunteers in Career Assessment Services, working with the career assessment evaluators.

Betty Isabelle holding certifcate with bob Burns
