In the 1920s, Congress set aside funds to help disabled WWI veterans reenter the workforce.
In 1929, Maryland's Governor Albert C. Ritchie created the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) to help people with disabilities go to work. It became a part of the Maryland Department of Education.
Now all states and territories use state and federal funds to support employment for persons with disabilities who want to work. Most of these agencies are in departments of education, labor or social services.
DVR's name was changed to the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) in 1994.
The Disability Determination Services (DDS) was established in 1955.
The Workforce & Technology Center (previously known as the Maryland Rehabilitation Center) opened in 1973.
The Office for Blindness & Vision Services (OBVS) began operation in January 2005.
