The DORS counselor works with the student and family from the first step of the rehabilitaiton process (referral) until the last (employment and/or independent living)!
DORS counselors are assigned to most Maryland high schools. These counselors have the specialized skills needed to work with students and their families. They also work closely with school personnel to identify students who may be eligible for services.
You may meet one of these counselors at school events such as transition fairs, back-to-school nights and at community events designed for students with disabilities. What they do
Rehabilitation counselors begin by looking at disability issues and discussing employment and career goals. They help students explore their strengths, abilities and interests. This will help the student and family to decide what programs and services--such as asssitive technology, job training or education--are needed. Counselors work with the student and family to write an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE).
Whether the rehabilitation program lasts for several months or several years, the counselor will follow along. When the student reaches the employment goal, the counselor will follow-up to be sure the job is a good match.
