Working in Partnership with School Systems

A young man sits at a table with his teacher.

DORS has agreements with each of Maryland’s local school districts. This is to help students with disabilities get the services they need to move from high school into work, higher education or training.

Once it is determined that a student is eligible, the DORS counselor schedules meetings with the student, school personnel. Family members and advocates are included as needed. This is an opportunity to help the student begin an exploration of his or her interests, abilities and goals. The counselor may also gather school, medical and psychological reports.

DORS will continue to work with a student until he or she has reached the employment or independent living goal. Case records for transitioning students typically stay open for a year or more.
