Jim Cabezas, the Chief Investigator for the Maryland State Prosecutor’s Office, lost his vision due to an eye disease. However, he was able to continue his long public service career after taking part in DORS Rehabilitation Technology Services. He learned to use special equipment and computer software to read documents and manage e-mail. In January 2005, WTC awarded Mr. Cabezas the Mark L. Stancil Technology Award. The annual recognition honors an individual who exemplifies the benefits of adaptive microcomputer technology as a gateway to competitive employment and economic independence.
The award has been named after Mark L. Stancil, who oversaw the planning and construction of the WTC. The WTC was previously known as the Maryland Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Stancil was the first director.Mr. Stancil realized in the early 1980s that microcomputers and technology held tremendous potential for the employment opportunities of individuals with significant disabilities. That early vision has matured into a nationally recognized technology program that promotes the use of adaptive microcomputer technology to expand employment opportunities for individuals with significant disabilities.
