Keys to Success
DORS believes that assistive technology (AT) services work best when:
Individuals are fully involved in making decisions about needed equipment and services.
AT is considered and used early in the rehabilitation process. This often opens up a wider range of employment possibilities.
Individuals can obtain and learn to use AT prior to employment. If there will be a gap between completion of AT training and obtaining employment, DORS will try to provide AT (through loan closet, other resources or purchase) on a temporary basis so that the individual has continued ready access to the equipment and can maintain skills developed during training.
Training needs are addressed and periodic follow-up assessments are provided.
AT assessments are conducted in the environment in which they will be utilized. If this is not possible, a simulation of the environment and tasks is the preferred approach.
AT services, including assessment, customization and training occur with the same service provider, if possible, assuming this is practical and consistent with the individual's informed choice.
The WTC/RTS Loan Closet is used when needed. Through this service, devices can be tried, used and returned when no longer needed. The sprit of the Loan Closet can continue when consumers return equipment for future use by others.
DORS staff shares all possible resources for AT information and funding, including the Technology Assistance Program, Volunteers for Medical Engineering (VME) and the Guaranteed Loan Program.
