Self-Employment & the RISE Program

Dreaming of owning a business?

Entrepreneurs with disabilities may be eligible to enroll in DORS Reach Independence Through Self-Employment (RISE) program.

Since 2004, over 180 individuals have started their own businesses after taking part in DORS/RISE Programs.

The RISE program also offers individuals with developmental disabilities and mental illness the opportunity to become business owners with the unique support offered by supported business enterprise programs. The individual with developmental disabilities works with business or family partners and/or service agencies to build successful business enterprises.

The RISE Program increases the success rate of new business start-ups through a series of seminars and coursework that eliminate the guess work and "trial and error" that can lead to business failure.

Advantages

The RISE Program will help participants:

Decide if owning a business is the right career goal.
Select the right industry with the greatest potential for success
Get in touch with seasoned entrepreneurs and business professionals and other aspiring new business owners.
Develop a business plan—the most essential component to achieve success. Program courses help individuals through the process of developing the plan. Business and banking professionals will also review the plan.
Provide access to professional counselors for planning marketing, financing and operations.
Identify financial resources for start-up and expansion.
