Environmental Services

Career Information
The goal of the industry is to provide a clean, healthy, safe and pleasant environment.  Typical duties include floor stripping and waxing, collecting trash, cleaning windows and bathrooms, replenishing supplies, grounds keeping and doing routine maintenance.

Length of Course
This course has three training options which are available as stand-alone programs or may be combined, based on the student's abilities and interests:

General Housekeeping (12 weeks)

Floor Technician (12 weeks)

Grounds Keeper (12 weeks)

If all three components are selected, the student will complete the training in 32 weeks.

Admission Qualifications

Candidates must be tactful and courteous, especially when working with the general public; work independently; perform repetitive tasks; follow verbal and simple written instructions; measure cleaning solutions to assure a proper mix; stand, stoop, bend and stretch for extended periods of time.

Groundskeepers need to tolerate extremes of temperature and outdoor conditions.

Employment Outlook
Environmental Service workers can expect to be assigned to specialized teams with more effective equipment and supplies, in order to clean the many buildings and grounds that require service. 

Employment in this field is expected to grow 21% through the year 2014.  Currently the average hourly wage is $9.24 per hour in Maryland.
