Career InformationThe food service industry offers a wide range of job opportunities in food preparation and food service. They include waiters, waitresses, bakers, cooks and managers. Typical entry-level positions include utility personnel, counter person and server.
Length of CourseThis 20-week course includes classroom instruction as well as hands-on experience in the Center's large modern cafeteria, which includes sanitation procedures, understanding recipes, portions, weights and measures, utensils and production sheets. Other skills taught include cash handling, customer service, basic cooking and safety procedures.
Admission QualificationsThe candidate must be tactful; work well with others; have the ability to follow verbal instructions; tolerate repetitive tasks; have the ability to stand for long periods of time; be able to lift and carry heavy trays and food containers; stoop, bend and stretch; be able to follow recipes and written instructions; and measure ingredients accurately.
Employment OutlookJob openings for food service workers are expected to grow and be strong through the year 2014. With additional skills and experience, some workers may advance to salaries in this field ranging from $16,880 to $20,000 annually for full time employment.
