Security Guard

Career Information
Security guards patrol and inspect property to protect against fire, theft, vandalism, terrorism, and illegal activity.  They use radio and telephone communications to call for assistance from police, fire, or emergency medical services as needed.  Security guards write reports outlining observations and activities during their shift.  They may also interview witnesses or victims, prepare case reports, and testify in court.

Length of Course
This is a 10-week training program to prepare participants for positions in retail, hospital, college and private security-related jobs. 

The program consists of both classroom and on-the-job training at the Workforce & Technology Center. 

Topics include: Security Guard Duties and Responsibilities; Report Writing and Investigations; Health and Safety; Communication Skills; Emergency Planning and Response; Professional Conduct; Crime Prevention; and Practical Exercises.

Admission Qualifications
Potential candidates for this training will be required to obtain a background check through the Maryland State Police prior to entry. 

Consumers must be at least 18 years of age; demonstrate a minimum reading ability at the 8th grade level and completion of the 11th grade; be able to follow verbal and written instructions; demonstrate an ability to write required reports; work flexible hours; and possess good observation skills.

Employment Outlook
Employment of security guards is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2012 as concern about crime, vandalism and terrorism continue to increase.
